A second anniversary giveaway

This giveaway is now closed.

Has it been two years?

Already??

It doesn't seem possible. Two years ago, I was anxiously fretting over our house closing and moving cross-country. I'd never lived through a winter of snow. Heck. I'd never lived through a single day of snow. Except for a brief ski vacation in Colorado, and that doesn't really count because I spent most of my time in the hot tub. I had no friends here. No connections. It was all a huge, daunting blank slate waiting to be filled.

And now...one (mostly finished) new kitchen, two winters of snow, and lots of amazing friends and experiences and food later...

I can even navigate the dreaded asterisk intersection with élan.

Thank you, my friends and readers, for joining me on this journey. I hope the next two years are just as delicious.

And now...{trumpet fanfare here}, to commemorate the second anniversary of A Bluebonnet in Beantown, I wanted to share something that I've wanted myself. So here it is. To be shipped to one lucky reader: one hardcover copy of Flour: Spectacular Recipes from Boston's Flour Bakery + Cafe (by Joanne Chang). List price $35.

A CSN gift certificate giveaway! (now closed)

There's nothing I love more than a giveaway. I love participating in them, and I absolutely love hosting them. Thanks to the great folks at CSN Stores, the Boston-based group of 200+ online stores, I'm able to give you a chance to win a $20 gift certificate to be used at any CSN store. Whether you're looking for a fun wood swing set as warmer weather approaches or new cookware for your kitchen or a cute new handbag, you'll be able to find it at a CSN store.

I wish I'd seen this very cool OKO Ergonomic Trike from Italtrike when my children were younger. Made in Italy, this trike merges modern design with comfort and safety. CSN's store Swingsets and More offers a wide range of products for outdoor fun, from bicycles for both children and adults to trampolines and lawn games.

Recently, I discovered the work of Eva Zeisel, the Budapest-born industrial designer known for her ceramics. (Late to the party, I know.) Her work is in museums throughout the world from the Victoria and Albert in London to New York's Museum of Modern Art. I found this lovely set of Chantal mugs by Eva Zeisel at CSN Stores. Wouldn't the garden green color suit my Cooking Apple kitchen perfectly?

How to enter:
- Browse through CSN's Swingsets and More store. Pick out something you'd like for your children (or grandchildren or niece/nephew) or something you would have loved as a child. Leave a comment here, telling me the item you've selected. This comment counts as one entry.

How to gain additional entries:
- Become my Google friend by clicking "follow" on the right-hand column under "Google friends." Post a separate comment. This will give you one additional entry.

- Tweet this giveaway. Please provide the link in a separate comment. This counts as one additional entry. You may do this only once during the giveaway period.

Rules:
- Contest is open to the residents of the U.S. and Canada only. You must be 18 or older.
- This contest ends on Sunday, March 6, at 11:00 pm EST.
- Winner to be announced Tuesday, March 8.

An arboretum in winter (and hints of things to come)

In any season, Arnold Arboretum is one of my favorite places in Boston. Each season offers a different perspective. In winter, the arboretum drowses. It's a season of silhouettes and silence. But even in the quiet, you can see hints of things to come. Spring lies wrapped in tightly furled buds, tipping the ends of branches.

Here's another hint of things to come. In conjunction with CSN Stores, I'm working on another favorite thing: a giveaway! You'll read more about it in a blog post soon. In the meantime, enjoy some more images from an arboretum in winter...

With no luxurious foliage to distract the eye, other aspects of the trees are accentuated. Their innate sculptural presence. Note this tree's muscular, contorted limbs...

...or the sense of whimsy in this crooked little tree. Its riotous black-and-white trunk and tangles of whip-thin branches tumbling to the ground look exactly like a tree that Dr. Seuss would draw.

Without the shrouding leaves, I could focus on the textures and colors of tree bark. What a spectacular camouflage trunk.

I have so many photographs to share, too many for this single post. I'll leave you for now with this. The second Sunday in May (or Mother's Day) is Lilac Sunday at the Arnold Arboretum. Hundreds of lilacs will be laden with blooms, perfuming the air with their heavy fragrance. Do you see something oddly alien or a hint of lilac yet to come?

First anniversary giveaway

This giveaway is now closed.

Happy Memorial Day! I hope you're having a good day, enjoying the freedoms defended by those we honor today. We spent a glorious day at Wingaersheek Beach. Well...glorious once Pretzel Boy recovered from the shattering news that he was forbidden to boogie board there.

So here I sit, sandy and salt-watered and possibly a touch sunburned. But what a day! Catching a tiny live starfish. Clambering over rocks and through tidal pools. Finding the most enormous (alive) surf clam. Beautiful. Even with the haze that we later learned was from forest fires in Quebec. Really. We're that close to Quebec? In Austin, we'd suffer from wildfires in Mexico. Now it's our northern neighbor.

I'm running late so I'll cut out the blither blather. To celebrate the first anniversary of A Bluebonnet in Beantown, I'm giving away a Wüsthof serrated bread knife and birch cutting board set.

Yes. My other giveaway was a knife. No. I don't have a thing for keen-edged objects. Well, I guess I have a thing for good knives and other well-designed and useful kitchen gadgets. Maybe I am a bit foodie.

The 6" bread knife is laser cut from a single piece of high-carbon rust resistant alloy. The blade's scalloped edge allows for an easy cut without crushing or tearing. The handle's ergonomic pebble grain finish is smooth and slip resistant. The cutting board, 12 3/8"L x 6 3/8"W x 1/2"H, is a handy size for bagels or small loaves. The board is finished with natural oils for a satin finish. Made in Germany. Retail value is $60.

How to enter:
- Leave a comment here, telling me what is your favorite kitchen gadget or utensil. This qualifies you for one entry.

How to gain additional entries:
You must submit each additional entry as a separate comment.

Please provide a link to your blog.

Two anniversaries and a giveaway

I've just returned from Newport, Rhode Island, where my husband and I celebrated our 20th anniversary. More on that in later posts.

On May 31st, I'll celebrate a different sort of anniversary: the first anniversary of my blog.

Two anniversaries marking two personal journeys. I was married straight out of college. I hardly understood what it meant to be an adult, never mind a married adult. Together, my husband and I learned how to be grown-ups, how to manage the daily details, how to weather storms, how to celebrate joys.

A year ago on Monday, I wrote my first blog post. My blog has charted both my family's experiences in New England and my own journey as a writer and photographer. My first entries featured photos taken with my iPhone. I had no idea what blog stats were or if I should respond to my comments. In short, I was clueless. I'm still learning and developing my voice and my images. Just as my husband and I, after twenty years, are still learning and growing as a couple, as parents, as partners.

To celebrate my first year blogoversary, I'm planning a giveaway. Tune in on Monday, May 31st, to see find out more about it. I hope you'll like it.

Henckels Giveaway, courtesy of CSN Stores

This giveaway is now closed.

A couple of weeks ago, Jason from CSN Stores contacted me about sponsoring a giveaway on my blog. What a great way to thank you all for following my New England (mis)adventures!

Based right here in Boston, CSN Stores features 200+ shopping sites with everything from furniture to tools to home decor. After almost a year of planning my kitchen remodel, I know the challenges of trying to source just the right pieces. I've found a great resource in CSN Stores. My fellow kitchen renovators (or those simply refreshing their rooms) can find an expansive selection of barstools and housewares for every style and budget.

Just imagine these classic, oft-imitated Emeco Navy Barstools adding authentic utilitarian chic to your space.

Or these warmly inviting, budget-friendly barstools from Woodbridge Home Designs.

I can imagine my family lounging on those barstools, snacking and chatting about the very important things that had happened that day. Perhaps with windows open, letting in the summer breeze.

Sunday we put up our screens. The girls wore flipflops, and we played frisbee in the backyard. Today's going to be another open window day. This weather makes me think of farmers markets, brimming with beautiful locally grown produce. Backyard gardens fragrant with herbs and flourishing plants, laden with tomatoes and cukes. But prepping fresh produce is a keener pleasure with a new, sharp blade. So...

The Giveaway Item: Zwilling JA Henckels Twin Signature 8" Chef's Knife, sponsored by CSN Stores

Made in Germany, this knife features an ergonomic handle, stamped one-piece construction, and laser-sharpened blade, using the FRIODUR high-carbon, ice-hardened process. My Zwilling J.A. Henckels knives have been the workhorses of my kitchen for almost twenty years. I hope that this knife becomes a staple tool in yours.
